The Hotel Thaya
The roots of the Hotel Thaya go back to 1870. For 21 years, the hotel was a stopover and a k.u.k. Horse changing station. The owner at the time, Karl Macho, had the building demolished and built a hotel with a theater hall. The hotel then passed through several hands until Franz Strohmer bought the house in 1979. Two years later, he got married and, together with his wife, spruced up the hotel. The permanent staff have been with the hotel for at least fourteen years, some even 30 years, which speaks for a good working atmosphere and benefits the guests. After two floods, the hotel was renovated and extended again and again. The Hotel Thaya was the first hotel in Lower Austria to be awarded three stars superior. The Lärchenstube, which dates back to 1938, is particularly beautiful in the hotel and makes you feel right at home.
In January 2018, there was a fire in the dining room. Once again, the disaster was seen as an opportunity and the restaurant, dining room and reception were completely renovated and modernized. On March 1, 2019, after 40 years, the hotel was handed over from father to son.
From February 2022, the hotel, now renamed "Stadthotel Thaya", will be part of the "Waldviertel-Hotels" group
On a warm summer evening, it is wonderful to sit on the terrace facing the Thaya and watch the sun set behind Raabs Castle.
The cuisine is down-to-earth and honest. The chef attaches great importance to regional and traditional cuisine. The specialties in the Waldviertel are carp, game, potato and poppy seed dishes.
Poppy seed noodles are very typical, as gray poppy seeds are grown in Lower Austria. Carp comes first, followed by Blunzen (blood sausages) and roast pork. The sweet side is covered by poppy seeds with poppy seed strudels, pancakes with poppy seeds, poppy seed cakes and doughnuts with a poppy seed crust.
We also cook Waldviertel hazelnuts for you, which are grown just a few kilometers from Raabs.
It is not for nothing that Hotel Thaya has been awarded the "AMA seal of approval" for its regional dishes. Of course, there is also a hazelnut spirit, but although it tastes delicious, the hotel's own grappa is the schnapps that is drunk the most.
